What Medicare Covers
Medicare is designed to help cover a wide range of health care needs, including the following:
-
Hospital and medical insurance— Medicare parts A and B, also called Original Medicare, may help cover hospital stays, doctor visits, lab tests and preventive services.
-
Dental, hearing and vision coverage—Medicare Advantage plans, also called Part C, are sold by Medicare-approved insurers and are an optional replacement for Medicare parts A and B. Part C plans must provide the same coverage as Original Medicare and often also include coverage for health care services not covered by parts A and B.
-
Prescription drugs—Medicare Part D plans may help cover the cost of prescription drugs, with varying levels of coverage based on your chosen plan.
Medicare recipients may also choose a Medigap plan to pair with Original Medicare. These plans are designed to help cover Medicare’s out-of-pocket health care expenses.
Where to Get Medicare
You can enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B through the Social Security Administration. This can be done online, over the phone, or in person at a Social Security office.
Eligible individuals can enroll in Medicare three months before they turn 65, during the month they turn 65 and three months after they turn 65. This seven-month period is known as the Initial Enrollment Period.
People under 65 are also eligible if they have been receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for a certain period or have specific medical conditions like End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
